Development coming to Washington Avenue in Carlstadt
The County of Bergen has been awarded close to two million dollars to improve the entire length of Washington Avenue in the Borough of Carlstadt. The project’s southerly limit is Washington Avenue’s intersection with Paterson Plank Road and the northerly limit is the intersection with Moonachie Avenue and Empire Boulevard.
County Executive Kathleen A. Donovan was informed by the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority (NJTPA) of Bergen County’s grant award in the amount of $1,920,000 from the federally funded 2014 Local Safety Program. The County intends to use the funds for safety improvements that will benefit all users including vehicles, pedestrians, and mass transit riders. The planned improvements are expected to include new sidewalks, handicap ramps, guiderail, median improvements, and improved bus stops. Traffic signal and crosswalk improvements that include pedestrian countdown signals and audible push buttons for compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act will also be included. A new traffic signal located at Washington Avenue’s intersection with a private roadway and Nam Knights Way, a short distance north of Paterson Plank Road, is also being considered to make it safer for vehicle turning movements and pedestrian crossings.
The NJTPA is expected to have a design engineer under contract in January 2014. Design plans are expected to be completed by May 2014 in order to receive an October 2014 federal authorization to proceed to construction. In order to meet this aggressive project schedule, the County’s Department of Public Works has already begun the topographic survey and conceptual design.
During the design phase, the County of Bergen will seek to work with the owners of properties with frontage along the project corridor. The success of the Local Safety Program project will partially rely on the cooperation of these property owners. The County is anticipating a high level of cooperation from property owners since the project will improve the safety of their employees while traveling to and from work. It is also a great opportunity for property owners to improve their property frontage at no cost.
The County will invite all property owners along the corridor to an informational meeting that will be held at the County Administration Building located at One Bergen County Plaza in Hackensack. A meeting date has not yet been determined.
