New Jersey Alliance for Action honored DMR at the second annual Distinguished Engineering Awards. DMR Architects was among several award winners for a 2014 Distinguished Engineering Award for the Bergen County Public Safety Operations Center.
DMR designed the $12 million, 30,000 square foot, 24/7/365 Bergen County Public Safety Operations Center which provides the County of Bergen and its communities with exceptional Emergency Management services. This state-of-the-art building houses a 911 Command Center, Communication Center, Emergency Operational Center, Office of Emergency Management, Radio Shop and key personnel offices. The building was designed using LEED sustainable principles.
The New Jersey Alliance for Action is a nonprofit organization comprised of business, academic and government professionals who support construction and economic growth throughout the State. DMR received the award at a reception at PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel, N.J.

Market Conditions Continue to Improve in Meadowlands Commercial Real Estate Submarket, According to NAI Hanson
Evidenced by declining vacancy and three consecutive quarters of positive absorption, the Meadowlands commercial real estate submarket experienced marked improvement in 2013, according to NAI James E. Hanson.
The findings are from NAI Hanson’s 2014 Winter Meadowlands Market Report, which saw the leading New Jersey-based commercial real estate firm examine the 1026 buildings in the Meadowlands of 20,000 or more square feet.
“The Meadowlands submarket, which demands the highest average asking rental rates in New Jersey due to its proximity to New York City, continued to demonstrate improving conditions in 2013,” stated Thomas Vetter, SIOR, a vice president with NAI Hanson and a member of the firm’s Meadowlands team. “On the year, our Meadowlands Team completed 32 transactions and leased or sold more than 600,000 square feet. We expect the strengthening to continue as the American Dream and Teterboro Landing projects come closer to fruition.”
Findings of the report include the following:
- In 2013, there were 172 leases consummated in the Meadowlands for a total of 5.2 million square feet. Of these leases, 77 were for spaces exceeding 20,000 square feet, and 66 percent of the space was leased during the first six months of the year.
- There is currently 7.5 million square feet available for lease in the Meadowlands, representing an 8.2 percent vacancy rate. Vacancy in the fourth quarter of 2013 was 7.6 percent, down 1.6 percent versus fourth quarter of 2012.
- There is currently 426,911 square feet of negative net absorption in the Meadowlands. However, there were three consecutive quarters of positive absorption in 2013.
- There were 38 sales transactions for properties exceeding 20,000 square feet, with 61 percent of the deals consummated during the first half of the year.

The Provident Bank Helps NJIT Kick Off 2014 Alternative Spring Break
The Provident Bank, New Jersey’s first and oldest community bank, and The Provident Bank Foundation were on hand to help NJIT kick off its 2nd annual “Alternative Spring Break” volunteer effort at a ceremony and pep rally at the school’s campus center in Newark on Friday, March 14, 2014.
More than 100 students, faculty and staff from NJIT’s Center for Resilient Design were also present to commence the statewide Post-Sandy rebuilding effort, which took place between March 15 and March 22. Organized by the Center for Resilient Design at NJIT’s College of Architecture and Design, the Spring Break program was made possible through a grant from The Provident Bank Foundation.
Dozens of employees of The Provident Bank also chose to participate in the program as part of the Bank’s “Commitment to Giving” initiative, a year-long campaign launched on the Bank’s 175th Anniversary last month that encourages employees to support local charitable organizations via volunteer efforts or donations.

The NY Giants and HackensackUMC Team Up with Fitness & Wellness of Maywood to Open State-of-the-Art Fitness and Health Center

Scarinci Hollenbeck Named NJ Tax Group of the Year
CorporateINTL, a U.K. based international business magazine, has named Scarinci Hollenbeck the “Tax Law Firm of the Year in New Jersey.” CorporateINTL is a leading, monthly publication for business leaders and financiers, providing key insights and commentary on emerging markets and domestic and international business.
According to CorporateINTL, it did an extensive search over a six month period, compiling nominations from over one million professionals involved in business. The nominations were provided to a small panel of judges who made the final decision.

Sustainable Jersey Announces Grants Funded by PSEG Foundation at Event in Camden
Sustainable Jersey announced the 34 New Jersey towns that were selected for Sustainable Jersey Small Grants funded by the PSEG Foundation. Since 2009, Sustainable Jersey has distributed approximately $1,375,000 in grants to New Jersey municipalities to help towns make their communities more livable, environmentally friendly and prosperous. This year, Kearny was one of these recipients.
“Supporting municipalities as they do innovative sustainability projects is a cornerstone of our organization’s mission,” said Sustainable Jersey Board Chair Pam Mount. “These grants help ensure that important sustainability projects at the community level can get done. Congratulations to all the grant recipients.”
“PSEG is committed to being a steward of the environment and making meaningful contributions to the communities it serves,” said Ellen Lambert, president of the PSEG Foundation and director of Corporate Responsibility. “We are proud to support this program and to fund projects that will make life better in neighborhoods throughout New Jersey.”
The 12 towns that received the $20,000 and $10,000 grants proposed projects that provide sustainable solutions to everyday challenges. Organic curbside waste recycling, hawk habitat restoration, a commuter bike depot, rain gardens, community educational campaigns, sustainability ordinances and more have been added to the list of initiatives that the Sustainable Jersey Small Grants program is funding.
New Jersey is the first state in the nation to have a comprehensive sustainability program for communities that links certification with strong state and private financial incentives, and a fully resourced program of technical support and training.
Currently, 72 percent of New Jersey’s towns and cities (406 towns across all 21 counties) have registered to become Sustainable Jersey certified.
Free Basic Skills Training Available for Businesses
Through an agreement with the New Jersey Business & Industry Association (NJBIA) as part of the New Jersey Community College Consortium for Workforce and Economic Development, the Bergen Community College Division of Continuing Education, Corporate and Public Sector Training offers free basic skills training programs for businesses and their employees.
Programs offered to small, medium and large businesses include skills training in verbal and written communication, Microsoft products, customer service, Spanish and math.
In order to qualify for the free training, businesses must:
- Operate in New Jersey
- Prove compliance with all applicable state tax laws
- Report the company name and federal employer identification number to the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development
- Provide a roster of employees scheduled for training
- Supply pre- and post-assessment scores, hours and attendance records of employees who participated in training
Please note, public, state and county employers are not eligible for the program.
Employers must pay their employees at their regular rate while they attend training classes.
