Meadowlands Basket Brigade Delivers Over 300 Thanksgiving Baskets

The Meadowlands Contractor and Building Services Committee hosted its fifth annual Basket Brigade on Sunday, November 19 at the North Jersey Friendship House in Hackensack.

Over 200 volunteers from local organizations donated their time to assemble over 300 baskets. These baskets were then delivered directly to local families and charities to help those in our community who may not be able to have a traditional Thanksgiving meal.

The Basket Brigade serves many families, individuals and organizations such as the Secaucus Veterans Center, the North Jersey Friendship House in Hackensack and Saint Anne’s Soup Kitchen. Families in need were identified through various local nonprofits groups, church groups, community organizations and businesses.

Each Thanksgiving Basket provided for a local family of up to six people. Each basket included turkey, stuffing, potatoes, gravy, corn, green beans, sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie, fresh rolls and more.

This year marked a total of 1,800 baskets delivered since the Meadowlands Basket Brigade began in 2012 in the wake of Hurricane Sandy.

“The real reward for the volunteers is the feeling they get when they deliver a basket to someone who has been struggling and see how deeply touched they are that someone reached out to help them in their time of need,” said Anthony Guzzo, who serves on the Meadowlands Contractor & Building Services Committee. “The Committee can’t thank our Chamber members enough who year after year have purchased individual baskets and allow us to keep this event going. A special thank you to Mr. Larry Inserra Jr. of Inserra Supermarkets who generously donated the majority of our basket items this year and the Friendship House who has graciously hosted this event for us the past couple of the years.”

The committee has already begun discussing details for next year’s Basket Brigade, so stay tuned for more information on how you can get involved.
