Who is marketing – YOU?

You are a product – promote yourself like one.

Almost every day, news of employees being laid off is in the press.

The old assumption that you can have a job for life is rapidly evaporating. The combination of technology, the ups and downs of the economy and social media marketing are altering the concept of work and careers for many.

The lack of career planning is becoming more painfully obvious for the majority of the population as the new world of work, based on automating jobs, unfolds. Robots can now make burgers, pizzas and almost everything else eventually.

Corporations are investing millions in digitalization of their operations to increase profitability and decrease employees in the process. Amazon continues its relentless pursuit of their customer centric strategy by eliminating the pain points for consumers by making it easy to get what they need from their online “Everything Store” with just a click on their electronic devices.

More and more shopping is transitioning away from the traditional brick and mortar retail outlet to the internet. It’s just “easier” and often “cheaper” in many cases.

Unfortunately, many employees in companies don’t even seem to realize what’s happening until they are notified that their employment is “no longer required!”

The lack of planning for a large portion of the population is pervasive and really hard to understand since life is about money. If life is about money, then your primary concentration should be planning for how you are going to make enough money to survive and thrive – right? Wrong – most assume that somehow, they will have the opportunity to make enough money at some kind of a job for their 40-year-old work life and then have enough money to live for the 20+ years of their life after work. That’s 60+ years!

Wouldn’t it be a good idea to have a plan for your financial survival for all those years?

If you study the U.S. Census it’s obvious that most of the population hasn’t planned for their lives, their careers or their finances.

It’s becoming noticeable that many will now have to realize that they are a product and will have to market themselves just like the products that they buy if they want to survive in the new world of work. If you continue to forfeit your destiny to someone else’s plan don’t be surprised if one day your job is automated out of existence by artificial intelligence, robotics or machine learning algorithms.

So, the question is: “Who is marketing – YOU?”
