The 2026 FIFA World Cup is just a few months away and some of the top players that are set to take the field at MetLife Stadium are being put in the spotlight. This week, the focus will be going towards Vinícius Júnior, a forward for Brazil. At just 25 years old, Vinícius is one of Brazil’s brightest young stars and a key piece to the team’s future success.
Vinícius kicked off his professional career at Brazilian club Flamengo, being just 16 years old when making his debut. He made his debut on May 13, 2017, as a substitute against Atlético Mineiro, a match that ended in a 1-1 draw. Less than two weeks later, on May 23, iconic La Liga club Real Madrid signed a contract to acquire Vinícius once he turned 18, as that was the minimum age for international transfers. Vinícius continued to play for Flamengo in the meantime, recording his first professional goal on Aug. 10 in a 5-0 win over Palestino.
Vinícius’ contract with Real Madrid became effective on July 12, 2018 and he was introduced as an official player for the club on July 20. His transfer cost Real Madrid €46 million, the second most expensive sale of a Brazilian player and the most ever spent by a club for a player under the age of 19. His steep price signified the talents that he displayed and Real Madrid’s decision to pay it showed their trust in him as the future of the team.
On Sept. 29, Vinícius made his debut with the club, entering the game as a substitute against Atlético Madrid. His first start came roughly a month later on Oct. 31 in a 4-0 Copa del Rey win over Melilla, recording two assists. A few days later, on Nov. 3, Vinícius recorded his first goal with the club in a 2-0 victory over Real Vallodolid.
During the 2021-2022 season, Vinícius began to grow and develop further as a player, as he recorded 17 goals, a significant increase from the 8 combined goals that he scored over his first three seasons. On May 12, 2022, Vinícius recorded his first hat trick for Real Madrid in a 6-0 win over Levante. As Vinícius improved, so did the club, as Real Madrid won the UEFA Champions League final on May 28 in a 1-0 victory over Liverpool. Real Madrid’s lone goal came courtesy of Vinícius, cementing his breakout season.
Real Madrid also won the 2022 FIFA Club World Cup, defeating Al-Hilal by a score of 5-3, with Vinícius scoring two goals. His impressive performance throughout the event led to him being named the tournament’s best player. The club’s success continued heading into the 2023-2024 season, when the team won the UEFA Champions League once again, with Vinícius Junior scoring another goal. His performance of six goals and five assists in the competition led to him being named the UEFA Champions League Player of the Season. Vinícius finished second in voting for the 2024 Ballon d’Or, which looks to name the top soccer player across all levels of competition. Vinícius is currently still at Real Madrid, where he has tallied nine goals and five assists this season.
On February 28, 2019, Vinícius was called up to play for the Brazil national team, though due to injuries, he didn’t debut until Sept. 10. Vinícius was named to the country’s 2021 Copa América squad and made an appearance as a substitute as the team went on to defeat Argentina in the final match.
On Mar. 24, 2022, Vinícius scored his first goal for Brazil in a 4-0 victory over Chile in a 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification match. Vinícius was named to the Brazil squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup and made an immediate impact, setting up a goal in the team’s opening group stage match that resulted in a 2-0 win over Serbia. In the round of 16, Vinícius recorded his first FIFA World Cup goal in a 4-1 win against South Korea. Brazil made it to the quarter-finals before narrowly losing to Croatia in a penalty shootout.
Brazil is currently ranked as the 5th best team in the world and is one of the most consistent contenders in the tournament. Vinícius has won countless trophies, including the La Liga title, UEFA Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup and Copa América, though the FIFA World Cup is the most prestigious of them all that he has yet to claim. On Jun. 13, Vinícius and Brazil will be heading to MetLife Stadium for the team’s first group stage match against Morocco, the eight ranked team in the world. The matchup between the two soccer powerhouses will be an exhilarating first match and a test for Brazil as they look to expand their record number of FIFA World Cup trophies to six. If the team returns to the FIFA World Cup final for the first time since 2002, the team will be returning to the Meadowlands, where the final match is being held.
