As the 2026 FIFA World Cup inches closer and closer, the next team put into the spotlight that will be participating in the tournament is Canada. The Canada men’s national soccer team earned their spot in the upcoming World Cup, marking the country’s third appearance in the tournament.
Canada secured their spot for the 2026 FIFA World Cup the same way as the United States, with an automatic qualification for co-hosting the tournament. This will be the nation’s first team appearing in back-to-back tournaments, as they have previously qualified in 1986 and 2022. Both appearances saw winless exits in the group stages, though the team has been trending in the right direction.
The team is currently ranked as the 26th best men’s national soccer team by FIFA, marking steady growth for the team, which was ranked 38th in Sept. 2024 and 44th in Sept. 2023. If they continue trending in this direction, Canada seems destined to tally their first win in the FIFA World Cup.
Their most recent match took place on Sept. 9 in a friendly match between Wales. Canada walked away with a 1-0 victory, thanks to a 41st minute goal from Derek Cornelius. Almost every match that the team has played this year, in fact, has ended in a win or a draw for Canada. Of the 10 matches that the team played in 2025, their only loss was the first match of the year against Mexico, tallying six wins and three draws following that game.
All of Canada’s group stage matches for the World Cup will be played in home territory, with one match in Toronto and two matches in Vancouver. The team will look to its captain Alphonso Davies to help lead the team to its first tournament victory in just a few months.
In the 2024 Copa América, Canada was able to find some success, making it all the way to the semi-finals, where they were eliminated by reigning champions Argentina. The match, ironically, took place at MetLife Stadium, where Canada will hope to play, with some of the tournament’s biggest matches being held there.
As the team continues to progress, they will look to secure their first win in the FIFA World Cup and go even further in the tournament. The team has already made history by qualifying for back-to-back tournaments and will hope to make even more history once the tournament begins.
