The massive effort to modernize the rail connection between New Jersey and New York took another step forward this week as the Gateway Development Commission awarded a $711 million construction contract for a key segment of the Hudson Tunnel Project that will run through the Meadowlands region.
The contract was awarded to Skanska-Creamer Sanzari NJSA JV and covers Package 3 of the Hudson Rail Tunnel project, a critical phase that will help connect the future tunnel beneath the Hudson River to the existing Northeast Corridor rail network.
Construction is expected to begin later this year and will focus on building approximately 1.5 miles of new rail infrastructure between Secaucus and North Bergen. The work will establish the surface alignment linking the future tunnel portal in North Bergen to rail lines serving the region.
For Meadowlands communities, the project represents another visible sign of progress on one of the nation’s largest transportation infrastructure initiatives. The alignment will pass through the Meadowlands area, where crews will construct viaducts, embankments, retaining walls, bridges, access roads and other supporting infrastructure needed to accommodate the expanded rail network.
Project officials said the work is particularly complex because construction will take place alongside active rail lines while maintaining existing train service. Contractors also will be responsible for relocating utilities and complying with environmental protections in sensitive Meadowlands wetlands.
The Gateway Program is widely viewed as one of the most important transportation projects in the country. The overall initiative is designed to replace and expand aging rail infrastructure connecting New Jersey and New York, including the century-old tunnels damaged during Superstorm Sandy.
According to the Gateway Development Commission, seven of the Hudson Tunnel Project’s 10 major construction packages have now been completed or are actively under construction, reflecting the accelerated pace of work across the program.
The latest award follows another major contract announced earlier this year for the construction of two tunnel sections beneath the Hudson River. That contract, valued at approximately $1.29 billion, will build two tunnel tubes, each roughly 1.4 miles long.
When completed, the Hudson Tunnel Project will create additional rail capacity, improve reliability for commuters and intercity travelers, and strengthen a transportation corridor that serves hundreds of thousands of passengers each day between New Jersey and New York.
Regional leaders have repeatedly described the project as vital to the economic future of both states, citing its role in reducing delays, improving resiliency and supporting long-term growth throughout the Northeast Corridor.
For the Meadowlands region, the latest contract award brings another major infrastructure investment to an area that continues to play a central role in the movement of people, goods and commerce throughout the New York-New Jersey metropolitan area.
