Since the World Cup’s inception in 1930, two trophies have been used: the Jules Rimet Trophy (named for the longest-serving FIFA president, 1921-54), used from 1930 to 1970, and the FIFA World Cup Trophy, used from 1974 to the present. The production cost of the current trophy is estimated at $242,700, according to reports. The original Jules Rimet Trophy was stolen in 1983 and has never been recovered.
The trophy, designed by Italian sculptor Silvio Gazzaniga (Jan. 23, 1921–Oct. 31, 2016), in 1971, is produced in Italy. The 18-karat gold trophy features two athletes lifting the Earth. It weighs a little over 14 pounds and is 14.49 inches tall.
It is still produced by the artisanal family business GDE Bertoni, where Gazzaniga always worked. It is considered one of the most valuable sports trophies in the world.
