Don’t Miss Blood Moon Eclipse and Overnight Parties at Liberty Science Center

The Liberty Science Center (LSC) in Jersey City is hosting two After Dark events, one saluting the rare blood moon — a total lunar eclipse — and the other celebrating Holi, the Festival of Colors paying tribute to the arrival of spring and the victory of good over evil.

The fun starts on Thursday, March 13, at 6 p.m. and goes all the way to 4 a.m. on Friday, March 14. Anyone who attends the entire event gets a shot at winning tickets to a future LSC After Dark party.

What is a Total Lunar Eclipse?

A total lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth comes between the Sun and the Moon and its shadow covers the Moon. The eclipse reaches totality as the full moon moves into the darkest part of Earth’s shadow, called the umbra, according to NASA. The more dust or clouds in Earth’s atmosphere during the eclipse, the redder the Moon appears.

The Hindu celebration of Holi is celebrated on the last full moon day of the Hindu luni-solar calendar month of Falgun. This usually occurs in March. The LSC party happens from 6-10 p.m. on Thursday, March 13 and includes a sing along to the new Bollywood Laser Show, dancing, and color bombing — throwing or smearing brightly colored powder at one another. There will also be food, cocktails, music, and more.

Eclipse Timeline
