Last week, the Giants took on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in their first game of the season without Daniel Jones leading the team at quarterback. The team decided to part ways with their former first-round draft pick less than a week prior, announcing Tommy DeVito as the team’s new quarterback before releasing Jones. With a 2-8 record, the Giants have been all but eliminated from playoff contention, however, this still proved to be a perfect opportunity for DeVito to establish himself as a permanent QB in the NFL.
Giants Fall to Buccaneers 30-7 at MetLife Stadium
Going into their matchup against the Buccaneers, the Giants were significant underdogs, with many believing that the change in quarterback may only lead to more struggles for the team. The concerns entering the game proved to be true immediately, as the Buccaneers scored a touchdown on their first drive, making it a 7-0 game early. As the second quarter opened, the Buccaneers added onto their lead with a field goal to make it 10-0.
The Giants offense was struggling, unable to lead any drives that pushed them into Buccaneers territory and their struggles would continue when the Buccaneers scored yet another touchdown. Before the half could come to a close the Buccaneers scored their 3rd touchdown of the game, making it 23-0 and forcing the Giants to make some significant changes heading into the second half.
On their first drive of the second half, the Giants were marching down the field all the way to the Buccaneers 5 yard line. However, a poorly timed fumble shattered the scoring opportunity and gave the ball back to the Buccaneers. They proceeded to march down the field to score yet another touchdown, making it 30-0. The Giants finally got in a rhythm, however, forcing their way down the field, all the way to a Devin Singletary touchdown. That would be all the scoring for the game, with each drive ending in a turnover or a punt, giving the Buccaneers the win.
For DeVito, the game may not have gone how he had hoped in his return, though his stats were still solid overall. While he threw no interceptions, he also threw no touchdowns. He went 21/31 with 189 passing yards and 32 rushing yards on 7 carries. When compared to 2023, DeVito averaged slightly more than 120 passing yards per game, showing a clear boost when looking at his performance last week.
What to Look Out for This Week
This week, the Giants will be taking on the Cowboys for a Thanksgiving Day matchup at 4:30 p.m. Perhaps, one of the most viewed days for the NFL regular season, the Giants will get an opportunity to get back in the win column on one of the biggest stages. The Jets will be taking on the Seahawks this Sunday at 1 p.m. at MetLife Stadium, where they will also hope to get back into the win column, hoping to gain some help from their bye week.
