On Sept. 21, the Yogi Berra Museum & Learning Center is attempting to set the Guinness World Record for the world’s largest game of catch. The Center is searching for at least 973 pairs to set the record, offering perks to those in attendance to offer a good time and the opportunity to make history.
Tickets for a pair cost $25, while it is $15 for a single person to join. Participants receive a free t-shirt, free food and snacks, free packs of Topps baseball cards and tons of entertainment. There will also be food trucks offering a variety of foods throughout the event.
Notable members of the baseball community will be in attendance for the special event, including iconic commentator Bob Costas, who is the event’s emcee. Former New York Yankee legends Ron Guidry, Willie Randolph and Bernie Williams will all be in attendance.
Pairs are required to stand at least 10 feet apart and play catch for 5 minutes simultaneously to qualify. The event will be held at Yogi Berra Stadium on the campus of Montclair State University. Participants will receive a commemorative baseball for each pair courtesy of Rawlings. The Museum will provide mitts, though it is recommended for guests to bring their own.
“We so often hear stories of how my grandfather connected with baseball fans everywhere, whether he met them in person or not,” said Lindsay Berra, Yogi’s oldest grandchild and a board member at the Yogi Berra Museum & Learning Center. “Continuing that spirit of connection through the simple act of playing catch feels like the perfect way to honor his legacy. There’s something timeless about grabbing a ball and a mitt and just being present with the person on the other side, sharing this game we all love so much.”
After the attempt, the Museum will open its doors free of charge for everyone to attend. Berra’s Cooperstown Hall of Fame plaque will be on display, which is believed to be the first time that it has left since his election in 1972.
Activities will be taking place on the concourse and stadium, which includes a batting cage, a chance to run the bases, clocking pitch speed and much more. Fans will also have the chance to win prizes, including custom-made baseball gloves and tickets to a Yankees game. All proceeds will go towards the Museum’s education programs.
