While many tuned into the Big Game this Sunday for the football, for a solid amount, the halftime show was the real star. Starring rapper Kendrick Lamar, the Apple Music Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show, was one of the centerpieces of this past Sunday. At the show, he made history by becoming the first solo rapper to perform at the halftime show.
2 years prior, Lamar was featured in the first rap-led Super Bowl performance, which was composed of legends of the genre, such as Eminem, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige and Lamar himself. Now, he got the stage all to himself, where he can put his talents on display for millions across the world to see.
After winning 5 Grammys a week earlier for his track Not Like Us, Lamar continued to make a great year for him even better. The hit record broke multiple records and accomplished feats that few have achieved. Lamar’s wins for Record of the Year and Song of the Year were just the second time a rap song has won the award.
As Lamar’s popularity in the music industry continues to grow even more, he still chose to bring a guest out for his performance. His guest was long-time collaborator and R&B artist, SZA, who he will be touring with later this year.
The duo played two of their biggest songs in Luther and All the Stars during the halftime performance. The collaboration as a preview for what is to come for when SZA joins Kendrick Lamar on his Grand National Tour.
The tour will be finding its way to the Meadowlands this May, when the two come to MetLife Stadium. Kendrick Lamar and SZA will be playing on May 8 and 9 for his first tour since the major success he has found recently.
