UFC 317, which is the event being featured on the watch party, is one of the most electrifying cards of the year so far. With two titles on the line, the stakes are at the highest level this week. The event is headlined by Ilia Topuria and Charles Oliveira, who will be fighting for the vacant lightweight championship.
Islam Makhachev, the former holder of the belt, seemed to have the division locked up for years to come, but following a change in champions in the welterweight division, he chose to move up. This left a vacancy and gave an opportunity for two contenders to hold the belt again.
For Oliveira, he was the champion before Makhachev, losing the belt to him and not gaining it back since. Topuria, was the champion at the featherweight division, a weight class lower, but he chose to move up and will be competing in his first match in the division. Both fighters have perfected two opposing sides of the sport, Topuria with elite boxing and Oliveira, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt.
The co-main event is another championship fight, this one for the flyweight division. Alexandre Pantoja has been the champion since 2023, defending his title three times in that span. His last win came against Kai Asakura and he will now be facing another Kai, Kai Kara-France. Kara-France is currently the number four contender in the division, having a shot at the title a few years back against a different champion, but falling short.
