Montclair State University, Somaiya Vidyavihar University Partner to Foster Collaboration for Health Care Workers as Gov. Murphy’s Economic Mission Trip to India Wraps Up

Choose New Jersey, New Jersey’s leading nonprofit business attraction organization, recently announced a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Montclair State University and Somaiya Vidyavihar University (SVU), Mumbai’s first private university. The agreement took place during NJ Gov. Phil Murphy’s economic mission trip to India. Gov. Murphy signed the MOU as a witness, encouraging academic and cultural collaboration between New Jersey and India between the two institutions in the field of health care.

“New Jersey is home to a thriving health care industry bolstered by our innovation economy and world-class talent,” said Governor Phil Murphy. “This partnership bridges the research capabilities of Montclair State University with the global perspectives of one of Mumbai’s most prominent universities to equip the next generation of health care workers to care for New Jersey residents.”

With the new MOU, Montclair State University and SVU will develop and implement a certificate program between the schools for adult and geriatric care. The agreement also creates a program to help students prepare for the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX), a standardized examination administered by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing  that is required to become a registered nurse (RN) in the United States.

“Montclair State University is part of an academic ecosystem preparing students for in-demand jobs in key industries, including life sciences,” said Jonathan GS Koppell, President of Montclair State University. “As an R2 research institution, we are ready to collaborate with Somaiya Vidyavihar University to help meet the need for licensed nurses in health care settings and improve patient care outcomes across the state.”

In addition to signing the MOU, the two schools reaffirmed their commitment to continue collaborations in the future. Montclair State University is one of several NJ colleges to sign an MOU with Indian universities.

“Somaiya Vidyavihar University is committed to preparing students for global careers in health care,” said Prof. V. N. Rajasekharan Pillai, Vice Chancellor, Somaiya Vidyavihar University. “Through this partnership with Montclair State University, we are able to combine our academic strengths with New Jersey’s innovative health care ecosystem to equip the next generation of nurses with the skills and knowledge needed to make a real impact on patient care worldwide.”

The agreement signifies continued efforts between New Jersey and India to improve one another in many aspects, from economics to academics. To view the full MOU between Montclair State University and SVU, visit choosenj.com.
