On Saturday, Feb. 7, the New Jersey Hall of Fame (NJHOF) at American Dream will be hosting Whitney Houston’s family in honor of the 40th anniversary of her illustrious career. The event, Celebrating 40 Years of Whitney, is set to last from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Houston was born and raised in Newark, New Jersey, where the world-renowned musician got her start. She joined the church choir at New Hope Baptist Church in Newark at just the age of five, which is where she also learned to play the piano. It wasn’t long before Houston found her passion for music and decided to pursue it as a career.
In 1970, Houston’s family relocated to East Orange, New Jersey after her mother signed a solo recording contract. Houston continued exploring her love of music and put her talents on display. Her singing career began at 14 years old, when she joined her mother’s band as a background singer. From there, she continued to grow, developing into one of the world’s most iconic vocalists.
NJHOF will be honoring the music and legacy of Whitney Houston, one of the most critically-acclaimed singers to come out of the Garden State, while celebrating some of her greatest milestones. Throughout her career, Houston has won two Emmy Awards and five Grammy Awards. Houston’s hit song “I Will Always Love You” is the best-selling single by a female artist.
Whitney Houston’s career is one of the most iconic of any artist, filled with tremendous awards and achievements. Houston is a member of the NJHOF Class of 2013, a spot rightfully earned with all she has accomplished throughout her career. Houston’s journey has several ties to the Garden State, where her career saw its beginning.
