The 2026 NFL Draft, which was held from Thursday, April 23 to Saturday, April 25, was one of the biggest events for football in the Meadowlands for the entire year. Both the New York Jets and Giants held several premier picks in the draft, positioning them well to add talented young players to their rosters.
New York Jets: David Bailey (EDGE), Kenyon Sadiq (TE), Omar Cooper Jr. (WR)
The New York Jets held two first round picks in this year’s draft, which increased to three as the team traded with the San Francisco 49ers to move up to the 30th pick. With many needs to address, the Jets drafted three players who would provide a spark on both sides of the ball.
The Jets selected David Bailey, an edge rusher from Texas Tech, with the second overall pick. Bailey and Arvell Reese were the consensus favorites to be selected with that pick, addressing defensive gaps for the team in a much needed way. Ultimately, Bailey’s experience at the position, along with his superb athleticism made him more appealing to the Jets.
The Jets also had the 16th overall pick in the draft, which they acquired from the Indianapolis Colts last season when trading for Sauce Gardner. The Jets used this pick to select Kenyon Sadiq, a tight end from Oregon. While the Jets just took a young tight end in last year’s draft, selecting Mason Taylor, Sadiq’s versatility at the position was simply too good to pass up on. At the position, he is speedy, able to run routes well and make contested catches. In his most recent season, Sadiq recorded over 500 receiving yards and eight touchdowns.
The Jets held the 33rd overall pick in the draft, but traded up for the 49ers’ 30th pick to select Omar Cooper Jr., a wide receiver from Indiana. Cooper Jr. is no stranger when it comes to winning, having just won the College Football Playoffs National Championship a few months ago. Wide receiver was a position that the Jets were widely speculated to target in the draft, which made the Cooper Jr. pick less of a surprise. However, the value that they were able to get him at makes the pick much more impressive, as he was one of the top receivers available. Cooper Jr. recorded 937 yards and 13 touchdowns in his championship-winning season.
New York Giants: Arvell Reese (LB), Francis Mauigoa (OT)
The New York Giants also held two first round picks in this draft, including the fifth overall pick and the 10th overall pick, which was acquired from the Cincinnati Bengals when trading Dexter Lawrence. The Giants’ position in the draft put them in a spot to draft two of the draft’s best players, helping them improve their young core for the future.
The Giants used their fifth overall pick to select Arvell Reese, a linebacker from Ohio State. Instead of landing with the Jets, as many expected, Reese will still be playing in the Meadowlands. Reese’s athleticism and explosiveness make him a defensive weapon for the Giants, who were able to grab him at a steal considering many had him going second overall.
With their 10th overall pick, the Giants selected Francis Mauigoa, an offensive tackle from the University of Miami. Mauigoa’s elite footwork, strength and ability to stop the momentum of rushers made him an ideal target for the Giants. Entering Jaxson Dart’s sophomore season, the selection of Mauigoa works to add extra protection for the young quarterback, as the Giants look to rely on him heavily. With a young core of Dart, Malik Nabers and Cam Skattebo, the addition of Mauigoa adds more protection for the young offensive stars.
The Jets and Giants both added additional talent in the later rounds of the draft to further improve their rosters, adding some of college football’s top players. Through the draft, both teams were able to make significant improvements to their roster and position them for improvement in the coming seasons.
