However, now that the tournament has ended, the venue is returning to hosting football games, as the home stadium of the New York Jets and Giants. The Jets will be the first team to take the field, as the team takes on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Friday, Aug. 14, at 7 p.m.
This marks the Jets’ first time playing at MetLife Stadium this year, with their most recent match occurring on Dec. 28, 2025 in a loss to the New England Patriots. The team will hope for better luck this week, as they enter the stadium with a revamped roster. Since the Jets last took the field at MetLife Stadium, the team has gone through several changes, including the addition of quarterback Geno Smith and three first-round draft picks.
The Jets took David Bailey, Kenyon Sadiq and Omar Cooper Jr. in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft, adding a significant amount of young talent to the team. While Sadiq has struggled with injuries, Cooper Jr. and Bailey have impressed throughout their time in training camp, looking to establish themselves as key playmakers for the Jets. Friday will be the first chance that these young players will get to play at MetLife Stadium, in what will hopefully be the start of accomplished careers.
While it has not been confirmed yet, Geno Smith is likely to be the Jets’ starting quarterback for the game, making his first appearance at MetLife Stadium as a member of the Jets since the 2016 season. Preseason matches often give teams the opportunity to allow younger, less experienced players to also get reps in game-like situations, which means Cade Klubnik could be making an appearance on Friday. The 22-year old quarterback was selected with the 110th pick of the 2026 NFL Draft and is looking to establish himself as a potential future fit for the team.
The Jets will be facing the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who the team previously faced in the 2025 season, falling to the Bucs in a close 27-29 defeat. The Jets are hoping to get help from their new players and young stars who are gaining more experience with each passing day. This Friday will be the first opportunity for many of the Jets’ players to get experience in an NFL stadium, preparing the team with the regular season just a month away.
