Millions of visitors who arrive in the United States for the 39-day tournament, hoping to travel freely across the country, will encounter the full gamut of public transit options.
Round-Trip NJ TRANSIT rail tickets from any NJ TRANSIT rail station to NYNJ Stadium for matchday travel will be available starting May 13 for a flat rate of $105 per person. Customers MUST purchase tickets in advance, as availability is limited and tickets may sell out.
New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill said round-trip NJ Transit tickets will now cost $98, well below the original $150 price. The pricing plan sparked outrage among local leaders, as the same 18-mile trip typically costs $12.90.
The governor said on Tuesday that the price cut happened “without New Jersey taxpayer money.” She thanked partners such as DoorDash, Audible, FanDuel, DraftKings, PSE&G, South Jersey Industries, and American Water for helping.
The reductions have been made possible thanks to private sponsorships from companies such as
DoorDash, Audible, and FanDuel have helped offset the costs without putting the burden
on New Jersey taxpayers.
“For the first time in World Cup history, no consistent price will be offered across all group-stage games,” Football Supporters Europe said in a statement. “Instead, FIFA is introducing a variable pricing policy dependent on vague criteria such as the perceived attractiveness of the fixture.”

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul unveiled a plan for $20 school-bus shuttle rides to MetLife Stadium on match days, The Athletic first reported. New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill announced she had located sponsors to help cut the cost of riding New Jersey Transit trains and buses by one-third from an original $150 ticket price.
Several new plans were announced to help fans get to the FIFA World Cup matches cheaper and faster.
FIFA’s ticket pricing plan has drawn international outrage as fans worry they are being priced out of the sport’s marquee event. The governing body has faced particular criticism for its use of dynamic pricing, which allows ticket prices to fluctuate based on demand.
What Else to Know About Travel Logistics
Planning your trip to the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the USA? There are some important changes
you’ll need to know about, especially when it comes to getting to New York New Jersey Stadium
for your match.
Parking
Parking at MetLife Stadium will be severely restricted during the World Cup. There will be no
general spectator parking, as the parking lots will be repurposed for the FIFA Fan Village and
security staging.
However, there are still options for those who need to park. Premium parking is
available at the nearby American Dream Mall, but these spots are limited and will set you back
$225 per space. Be sure to book in advance, as availability will be tight.
Rideshare
If you’re considering ridesharing services like Uber or Lyft, there’s a catch: These services will not
be allowed to drop passengers off at the stadium gates. Instead, they’ll be directed to a designated
rideshare zone at Meadowlands Racing & Entertainment, about a mile away from the stadium.
Fans will then need to walk to the venue, so plan accordingly!
Trains and Buses
When it comes to travel options, fans have two primary choices: buses and trains. Each has its own
benefits, depending on your preferences and budget.
Buses: Starting at $20, shuttle buses will transport fans from key locations in New York City
(such as Port Authority Bus Terminal and Midtown East) to the Hackensack Meridian School of
Medicine near the stadium. Buses are expected to carry around 10,000 passengers per match,
making them a budget-friendly choice, although they will have a lower capacity than the trains.
Trains: For those willing to spend a little more, NJ Transit trains will operate direct services
from NY Penn Station to Secaucus Junction, with a $98 round-trip fare. These trains are expected
to carry up to 40,000 passengers per match, making them the preferred choice for those who
need to get to the stadium quickly and comfortably. If you’re traveling from Manhattan orthe
surrounding areas, this may be the more efficient option.
Commuters Beware: Four-Hour Lockout on Match Days. While the 2026 FIFA World Cup promises a once-in-a-lifetime experience for fans, it also brings challenges for regular NJ Transit commuters. During the tournament, there will be a four-hour lockout on outbound service from Penn Station to non-ticket holders on the eight match days
(from June 13 to July 19).
Gov. Kathy Hochul slashes bus price
New York Gov. Kathy Hochul also said on Tuesday that the round-trip price of bus tickets from Manhattan to matches will be $20, down from $80.
The buses will transport up to 18,000 people on non-school match days and 12,000 people on school match days.
“Getting to the World Cup should be as accessible as possible,” she said on social media. “And because New Yorkers are helping host the world, 20% of those tickets will be reserved exclusively for New Yorkers.”
New bus lane to speed up service to LaGuardia
Meanwhile, in Queens, Mayor Zohran Mamdani is rolling out a new dedicated bus lane on Broadway to speed up service to LaGuardia Airport ahead of the tournament.
Right now, Q70 buses on that corridor crawl at less than three miles per hour during evening rush.
The new eastbound lane is designed to help travelers, airport workers and Queens residents beat that gridlock.
“The World Cup may come and go, but the investments we made to our streets and public transit must serve New Yorkers for decades to come,” Mamdani said in a statement. “Arriving in New York City should be fast, affordable and reliable all year round — not just during major events. This new bus lane will help welcome visitors from around the world this summer while delivering faster commutes every day for the thousands of working-class New Yorkers who rely on the Q70.”
The city’s Department of Transportation will present the proposal to the local community board later this month and expects to complete the project before the first match begins.
The buses will transport up to 18,000 people on non-school match days and 12,000 people on school match days.
“Getting to the World Cup should be as accessible as possible,” she said on social media. “And because New Yorkers are helping host the world, 20% of those tickets will be reserved exclusively for New
Yorkers.”
