On Tuesday, March 24, New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill signed a bill into law to help the state as it works to reach its clean energy goals. Gov. Sherrill, who was elected to be the Garden State’s newest leader this past November, made clean energy expansion an integral part of her gubernatorial campaign. The legislation works towards turning her goals for a greener New Jersey into a reality.
“I’m proud to take action today to accelerate progress on our clean energy goals and expand energy storage in New Jersey,” said Gov. Sherrill. “By strengthening the Garden State Energy Storage Program, we’re cutting through unnecessary delays and opening the door to more competitive, cost‑effective storage projects that will help us meet our needs and build a cleaner, more reliable grid. I’m grateful to our partners in the Legislature for acting quickly to deliver this win for New Jersey’s energy future.”
The legislation will modify project maturity requirements to expand the number of projects eligible to receive incentive awards under the second segment of the transmission-scale GSESP. This increases competition amongst bidders and protects ratepayers from inflation. It will also extend the deadline for BPU to approve the first and second segments of incentive awards for eligible transmission-scale energy storage systems under the GSESP from June 30, 2026 to Dec. 31, 2026.
This is one in a series of many moves already made by Gov. Sherrill to combat rising energy costs and expand clean energy in the Garden State. Some of the prior moves that Sherrill has already made can be found listed below.
- Froze utility-rate hikes and declared a state of emergency to accelerate in-state energy generation.
- Approved six new energy projects, including three large-scale solar projects and three battery energy storage projects.
- Launched the next phase of the Garden State Energy Storage Program.
- Opened up 3,000 megawatts of community solar for new applications.
- Opened 300 megawatts of the Competitive Solar Incentive Program for new projects.
Only a few months into her tenure as NJ Governor, Mikie Sherrill has made it clear that clean energy expansion is one of her top priorities in the role. The moves she has already made and is continuing to make outline her commitment to improving clean energy in New Jersey.
