NJ Transit Unveils New AI-Powered Chatbot, Amidst Other Digital Upgrades

NJ Transit is enacting several changes to bring a significant digital customer experience upgrade, which includes a redesigned website that features modernized navigation, improved accessibility and improved system status information. In addition to the new website, the agency is also launching “Navvie”, a new AI-powered chatbot on the website that is intended to help users quickly access trip planning and travel details. NJ Transit’s mobile app will also be undergoing digital upgrades, in an effort from the agency to modernize and improve the digital experience for customers.

Navvie, NJ Transit’s new chatbot pilot, gives customers a way to have their questions answered in a simple, conversational way, without having to go through several different pages to find an answer to their problems. Navvie is available 24/7 and can help with trip-planning, travel information, schedules, alerts and transfers. While results of the pilot are examined, the chatbot is currently only available on the website, but may find its way to the NJ Transit mobile app by the end of 2026.

“Our redesigned website puts customers first while Navvie, our first digital assistant, gives customers a smarter, more convenient way to plan their trips and get travel information,” said NJ TRANSIT President and CEO Kris Kolluri. “These improvements reflect our commitment, and Governor Sherrill’s commitment, to deliver a modern, intuitive transit experience for all New Jerseyans.”

Starting Sept. 1, 2026, NJ Transit’s new website will contain a new design that allows for easier and more efficient use from its customers. It will also consist of a comprehensive presentation of rail, bus and light rail schedules, as well as displaying service alerts, advisories and more essential travel information. Additionally, there will be enhanced accessibility and increased text clarity and contrast.

On Sept. 9, additional changes to the NJ Transit mobile app will bring improvements that focus on service clarity, reliability and trip-planning, based on feedback from customers. Train, bus and light rail schedules will all be brought together in a format that is easier for users to navigate. There will also be improved access to active service alerts and service information, as well as upgrades to trip-planning.

Another release that will come later in September will focus on the home screen, adding a Home Screen Favorites and a Breaking News/Service Information module. The update will allow users to navigate major service announcements from their home screen.

NJ Transit’s actions outline the agency’s commitment to modernizing its digital presence and providing customers with an easier and more efficient travel experience. The changes made to NJ Transit’s website and mobile app are designed to help users navigate their commute in an easier way.
