On The Road: NJMEP’s Mobile Training Center Redefines Workforce Development

In an effort to boost wider interest in manufacturing careers and deliver easier access to advanced training, NJMEP is hitting the road with its state-of-the-art Mobile Training Center. This custom-built RV is aiming to revolutionize how advanced manufacturing training is conveyed across New Jersey.

“This Mobile Training Center was one of the first real investments I wanted to make when I came on board with NJMEP,” said Pete Connolly, who became NJMEP CEO in June 2023.

Connolly said when he first joined NJMEP as COO in 2022, the two consistent issues were:

  • Transportation problems preventing manufacturers from funding professional development training.
  • Engaging K-12 students, parents, and school counselors about manufacturing as a successful career path.

“Employing this Mobile Training Center will solve both those challenges. We can deliver training to any community, any manufacturer, and utilize the Mobile Training Center as a modular classroom or hands-on training lab. We can take the training facility to nearly anywhere in the state. Also, we will incorporate the Training Center in the Future Makers and Creators Tour locations we are hosting with the support of the NJEDA,” Connolly said.

The innovative mobile training lab is a custom-built, 38 by 8.5-foot 2023 Winnebago WFJ38S. It is equipped with the latest in advanced manufacturing technologies, including:

  • 3D printers
  • robotic arms
  • augmented reality (AR) welding equipment
  • HAAS PLC-powered CNC mills
  • Laser Engraving Machines
  • The ability to provide custom training depending on the company/partner’s needs

Additionally, it offers custom training options tailored to meet specific company needs, making it a versatile tool for comprehensive, hands-on training across a variety of locations.

The mobile training RV will travel to various manufacturing operations, schools, and community centers throughout the state, making it easier than ever to access specialized training and resources.

“As advanced manufacturing continues to grow in our state, we’re dedicated to upskilling our talent while making training and career opportunities more accessible to all communities here in New Jersey. This investment will foster talent attraction, boost career development, and encourage business partnerships throughout our 21 counties, further driving economic growth and enhancing the quality of life within the Garden State,” said NJBAC Executive Director Melanie Willoughby.

The NJMEP Mobile Training Center recently made its debut at the New Jersey State Fair at the Sussex County Fairgrounds, where NJMEP’s Workforce Development team engaged with the community, showcasing advanced manufacturing technologies and shared career pathways in the industry. Attendees included children, parents, and legislators.

In September, the NJMEP Mobile Training Center is headed to more schools throughout New Jersey as part of the Future Makers and Creators Tour — a program that educates young New Jerseyans on career opportunities and the local manufacturers hiring.

The RV will continue its journey across the state for the , ensuring that every corner of New Jersey has access to the tools and training necessary to support the growth of the manufacturing industry.
