The New York Red Bulls have transferred midfielder Gustav Berggren to Polish Ekstraklasa side Lech Poznań for an undisclosed transfer fee, the club announced on Wednesday, Aug. 12.
The clubs did not disclose financial terms, although Polish and international media reports placed the transfer fee at approximately €500,000, or about $575,000. The Red Bulls reportedly paid roughly $2.1 million to acquire Berggren in 2025. His guaranteed 2026 compensation was $1.31 million, according to the MLS Players Association.
“We want to thank Gustav for his professionalism and commitment during his time with our club,” said Head of Sport Julian de Guzman. “He has been a great teammate and person to have within our organization, and we wish him and his family nothing but success in the next chapter of his career.”
Berggren, 28, has been with the Red Bulls for two seasons after joining on July 23, 2025. He made 17 MLS appearances for the club, where he tallied two assists. The midfielder recorded his first career MLS assist against the Columbus Crew on Oct. 18, 2025.
Prior to arriving in New York, the Swedish midfielder made 105 appearances across all competitions for Raków Czestochowa helping the club capture its first-ever Ekstraklasa title and earning the club’s Team MVP honors during the 2024 campaign.
The Goteborg, Sweden native also brought extensive experience from Sweden, where he made more than 150 appearances for BK Häcken and helped the club win the 2022 Allsvenskan title and also the Swedish Super Cup in 2016 He has represented Sweden at both the youth and senior international levels, earning his first senior national team cap in 2020.
Never a Standout
The Red Bulls acquired him from Poland in July 2025 on a contract through 2028, reportedly paying about $2.1 million. But Berggren never became one of MLS’s marquee players. In 2026 he recorded limited playing time, with 10 MLS appearances, three starts and 307 minutes according to the Red Bulls’ player profile.
Lech Poznań is one of Poland’s prominent clubs and was the defending Ekstraklasa champion when the deal developed. Berggren previously won league championships in Poland and Sweden. The move breaks Berggren’s contract early and creates roster flexibility for the Red Bulls.
