Six Hackensack Meridian Health Hospitals Earn “A” Safety Grades, Highlighting Commitment to Patient Safety

Hackensack Meridian Health, New Jersey’s largest and most comprehensive health network, recently announced that six of its hospitals earned an “A” grade for Hospital Safety from The Leapfrog Group. The grade is the result of consistent determination from the health network to provide patients with high-quality care and a safe environment. The Leapfrog Group is a national nonprofit watchdog organization that analyzes hospital performance data, ensuring that people have access to safe, high-value care in the United States.

Hackensack University Medical Center and Bayshore Medical Center are among a select group to be named as a “Straight A” hospital, meaning that they have earned an “A” grade in five consecutive cycles of the Hospital Safety Grade.

“Year after year, our world-class team members demonstrate an unwavering commitment to the highest standards of patient safety,” said Robert C. Garrett, FACHE, chief executive officer, Hackensack Meridian Health. “That dedication drives our team to transform healthcare with quality at the center of everything we do. This recognition from The Leapfrog Group reaffirms the impact of our work and strengthens our commitment to raising the bar for quality and safety in New Jersey and beyond.”

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade focuses on preventable injuries, infections, accidents and medical errors. According to the Leapfrog Group, roughly 200,000 deaths a year occur from preventable conditions. The grades that each hospital receives reflects errors, accidents, injuries and infections, in addition to the systems put in place to prevent them.

“Our emphasis on quality and safety is improving outcomes for the patients and communities we serve,” said Jose M. Azar, MD, executive vice president, chief quality officer, Hackensack Meridian Health. “We are strengthening our investment in innovative safety measures and resources to enhance the overall care experience. By embedding quality and safety into every system, every process, and every patient interaction, we are ensuring excellence is the standard, not the goal.”

The overwhelmingly positive grades signifies that Hackensack Meridian Health’s hospitals are taking the proper precautions needed to ensure safety for their patients. Additionally, the “Straight A” grades, demonstrates the longevity and consistency at which the network’s hospitals are delivering this care.
