Veterans Day, founded in 1926, is a state and federal holiday observed every Nov. 11 to honor past and present military veterans. It is always on Nov. 11, regardless of the day of the week.
While the federal observance is always Nov. 11, communities may hold celebrations on a nearby weekend to allow more people to participate. The date is fixed because it marks the anniversary of the end of World War I at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918.
Each year on Nov. 11, there is a prominent Veterans Day ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery, where the president traditionally lays a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
