As summer continues, the Hambletonian becomes closer and closer. The Hambletonian is hosted at the Meadowlands Racetrack and is one of the most prestigious events in the world of harness racing. It will be taking place on Aug. 2, with doors opening at 10 a.m.
This year’s race is even more special, as it marks the 100th anniversary of the Hambletonian. The race began nearly a century ago, with the first event being held at the New York State Fair in Syracuse. The event switched homes over the next few decades, before finding a permanent location at the Meadowlands Racetrack, where it has stayed since 1981.
As the Hambletonian approaches, Ken Warkentin, a track announcer at the Meadowlands Racetrack and experienced mind in the world of harness racing, has been coming out with his top 10 horses for the race each week leading up to the event. Currently sitting at first place in his rankings is Super Chapter, whose driver is Scott Zeron, which is a good sign for its future. Zeron brings much experience, having won the Hambletonian in 2016, 2018 and 2023.
Zeron isn’t the only previous winner looking to make a run, however, as Go Dog Go, who is ranked sixth by Ken Warkentin, is driven by 2022 winner Todd McCarthy. No. 5 ranked Gap Kronos S is driven by 2021 winner, Ake Svanstedt. No. 7 ranked Onajetplane is driven by Andrew McCarthy, who won in 2020 and tied the Stakes record.
Meadowlands Racing & Entertainment are pulling out all the stops in preparation for the special celebration of the Hambletonian. There will be a hat contest, dishing out a $500 first place prize to whoever can pull off the most unique hat, with $250 going to second place and $100 going to third.
They’re not just judging hats, however, as there is a $2,500 best dressed contest, where influencer Caitlyn Warakomski will be joining. There will be rides, games and live music to keep all entertained before the races kick off. Additionally, there will be a variety of food trucks to make sure all guests can feed their appetite.
The Hambletonian, otherwise known as ‘Harness Racing’s Greatest Day’, is just around the corner and provides a great experience for the entire family.
