Women’s Basketball Scores Historic Year for FDU

Lost in the chaos of the FDU Men’s Basketball team’s upset victory over Purdue is the fact that the school’s Women’s Basketball team also put up a dominant 2023 season.

FDU’s Women’s Basketball team finished with a record of 24-8, which was the best in the Northeast Conference (NEC). The Knight’s 24 wins is a program record, marking the bright future ahead for the team. Led by head coach Angelika Szumilo and Junior Chloe Wilson, the Knights fought all the way to the final round of the NEC Tournament.

However, an unfortunate loss to Sacred Heart in the final round of the NEC Tournament eliminated them from contending for a spot in the March Madness tournament. Instead, they were invited to the Women’s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT), which is still an impressive feat, where they would go on to fall to Columbia in the first round.

Their participation in the WNIT this year was their second consecutive appearance in the tournament for the first time in program history, yet another sign of the success to come for the team.

While the outcome of the season may not have been what the team had hoped for, there are still many positives to look back on. Most notably, the team being crowned NEC Regular Season Champions and Junior Chloe Wilson scoring her 1000th point as an FDU Knight.
