As the Meadowlands prepares to host several games in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, including group stage matches, one quarterfinals match, two semifinals matches and the final match. One of the group stage matches held at MetLife Stadium will feature Brazilian club SE Palmeiras taking on Al Ahly FC on Jun. 19.
Before Al Ahly FC comes to the Meadowlands in preparation for the tournament, let’s take a deeper dive into the team’s history and the unique traits that they bring to the region.
Al Ahly FC is a soccer club based out of Cairo, Egypt, the country’s capital. The club plays in the Egyptian Premier League, which is the highest level of the sport in the country. The club is known for their continued success over the years, consistently contending for tournaments that the Confederation of African Football (CAF) hosts. They are the most recent winners of the CAF Champions League, which sees the continent’s top clubs face off against one another.
The club was founded in 1907, giving them a great history within the sport across the country. Since they have been around for so long, they have been able to grow a large fanbase as a result. The team needs a stadium to fit all of their supporters, which is why they play at Cairo International Stadium in Nasr City, Cairo, the third largest stadium in the country. Holding a capacity of 75,000 people, it also houses the Egypt national football team, as well as other sporting events.
Al Ahly FC currently sits at 2nd place in the Egyptian Premier League standings, holding a record of 5 wins, 4 draws and 0 losses. They are just one point behind the league leaders, putting them in a good spot to overtake them. Al Ahly FC were the champions of the Egyptian Premier League last season and are hoping to replicate those results this season.
Continuously displaying high level soccer, Al Ahly FC has built a reputation as one of the country’s best. The club will hope to translate their success in the Egyptian Premier League and CAF tournaments to the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup as they head to the Meadowlands.
