France
France has been one of the most dominant teams at the World Cup in recent years, making it to the 2022 FIFA World Cup final and winning the 2018 FIFA World Cup. With a roster that boasts some of the best talents that the game has to offer, from reigning Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembélé to France’s hero in 2022 Kylian Mbappé. France is currently ranked by FIFA as the third best team in the world, making them one of the most favored teams to win the entire tournament.
France’s history in the tournament is one of the most storied pasts of any nation, however, it wasn’t until recent decades that the team began to dominate at their current level. France won its first FIFA World Cup title in 1998 and has appeared in the tournament’s final match three times since then. The squad will look to continue a historic run, with their first match being held in New Jersey.
Senegal
Senegal’s history in the World Cup is far less storied than France, however, that does not mean that they are an easy opponent. Senegal is currently ranked as the 16th best team in the world by FIFA, one of the highest spots that the team has reached in its history. Senegal’s first appearance came at the 2002 FIFA World Cup, when the team reached the quarter-finals. It would be a 16-year drought before Senegal returned to the tournament in 2018. More recently, at the 2022 rendition of the tournament, Senegal reached the round of 16.
Earlier this year, Senegal won their second African Cup of Nations, which crowns the best soccer team in Africa. Senegal defeated Morocco, a team that recently played in New Jersey, however, the decision was controversially overturned months after the match took place. Regardless, Senegal established themselves as one of the top teams in the continent and a threat in international soccer.
History of France vs. Senegal
Senegal and France have only played three times before, with Senegal currently leading the all-time series. Senegal has won two matches, while France won the other match. None of their matches have been recent, with their first match taking place in 1956, which resulted in France’s only win. A few years later, in 1963, the two teams faced off again, with Senegal evening the series.
More recently, France and Senegal met at the 2002 FIFA World Cup in their opening group stage match, similar to this year. Despite France being the reigning world champions, Senegal went on to win the match by a score of 1-0, with France failing to make it past the group stages.
On June 16, at 3 p.m., the teams will face off for the first time since 2002. This will be France’s first FIFA World Cup match since their devastating loss to Argentina in the 2022 FIFA World Cup final. With both teams finding success at the international stage, the matchup is expected to be a close battle.
