The Gateway Development Commission (GDC) announced the opening of the Hudson Tunnel Project New Jersey Community Engagement Center in Weehawken, New Jersey. GDC Community Engagement Centers are now open near the active Hudson Tunnel Project construction sites in New Jersey and New York.
GDC’s Community Engagement Centers are outreach hubs where members of the public can connect with GDC staff and learn about the Hudson Tunnel Project through interactive exhibits that explain what is being built, why it matters, and how the project will deliver more reliable train service for the region.
“GDC is committed to being a good neighbor to the communities where we are building the Hudson Tunnel Project and to making sure everyone who will benefit from reliable, modern rail travel into, out of, and through New York City understands the work we are doing and is up to speed on our progress,” said GDC CEO Tom Prendergast.
“Our Community Engagement Centers exemplify this commitment, providing dedicated spaces near our active construction sites in New Jersey and New York where everyone can learn about the Hudson Tunnel Project, ask questions, and get the latest updates on our work to deliver this vital investment in America’s rail network. We are grateful for the support we’ve received from Governor Sherrill and Governor Hochul, as well as our many other partners in both states, and we are proud to provide this resource in the communities where construction is happening,” Prendergast said.
Both Community Engagement Centers contain family-friendly educational exhibits that include a video explaining the ten distinct construction projects that make up the Hudson Tunnel Project, an interactive digital map where visitors can see the latest photos of GDC’s construction sites and learn about future projects, and a cross-sectional model of the new tunnel that visitors can step inside. The New Jersey Center also includes a model of the tunnel-boring machine that will be used to build the section of the new tunnel beneath the Palisades cliffs.
“Building a project as large and complex as the Hudson Tunnel Project requires support from everyone from federal, state, and local elected leaders to the residents who live across the street from our construction sites,” said Rebecca Zack, GDC Senior Director of Government and Community Affairs. “GDC’s Community Engagement Centers are an important part of our ongoing efforts to make it easy for everyone to understand the construction work happening today and the long-term benefits the Hudson Tunnel Project will deliver for workers, riders, and the entire region. We are grateful to the communities hosting these spaces for partnering with us as we deliver this critical project.”
GDC staff are on site to answer visitors’ questions and share the latest information and resources. In addition, each Community Engagement Center includes a dedicated section explaining the construction projects in the community where it is located, as well as resources with detailed information about current and upcoming construction activities.
The New Jersey Community Engagement Center is located at 68-72 West 18th Street, Weehawken, NJ. It is open to the public from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. on Mondays and from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
GDC is committed to a proactive and comprehensive community engagement program that reaches residents near active Hudson Tunnel Project construction sites, as well as the millions of current and future riders who will benefit from reliable, modern train service when the Hudson Tunnel Project is completed.
In addition to staffing the Community Engagement Centers, GDC’s Community Engagement team proactively engages project stakeholders, partners, and members of the public through presentations to local organizations and at local schools, organizing open houses where residents can learn about construction happening in their neighborhoods, and tabling at community events.
