The 2026 FIFA World Cup field was recently solidified over the past week, signaling that the tournament is on the horizon. As the tournament inches another week closer, a new star player coming to the Meadowlands to play in the tournament is getting the spotlight. This week, the focus will be on Bukayo Saka, a right winger for England. Saka is widely regarded as one of the best wingers in the world, being highly praised for his elite dribbling and high knowledge of the sport.
Bukayo Saka’s talents were apparent from a very young age, as he joined Arsenal’s Hale End academy at the age of seven years old. On Nov. 29, 2018, at just 17 years old, Saka made his first-team debut for Arsenal. Saka entered the game as a substitute in a UEFA Europa League match against Vorskla Poltava. On Jan. 1, 2019, Saka made his Premier League debut in a 4-1 victory over Fulham, coming in as a substitute. Saka’s debut made history, as he became the first player born in 2001 to play in the Premier League, displaying how advanced he was for his age.
On Sept. 19, Saka scored his first goal and recorded two assists in a 3-0 win over German club Eintracht Frankfurt. His impressive performance put his coaches on notice and led to him making his first Premier League start just a few days later, which ended in a 3-2 over Aston Villa. Over the course of the season, Saka began to establish himself as an integral piece of this Arsenal team, starting in over half of the club’s matches.
On Dec. 26, 2020, Saka notched his 40th Premier League appearance and later went on to be voted as Arsenal Player of the Month. The following month, Saka would earn the honors once again, after recording three goals and an assist. After earning a goal and two assists in February, Saka would be named as the Arsenal Player of the Month for the third consecutive time.
In the 2021-22 season, Saka saw his numbers take a significant jump, recording career highs in both goals and assists for Arsenal. Saka recorded 11 goals, reaching double digits for the first time with the club, as well as seven assists across 36 Premier League starts. Saka would go on to be named as Arsenal’s Player of the Season for his key contributions to the club.
On Mar. 13, 2023, Saka received the award for Men’s Young Player of the Year at the 2023 London Football Awards. A few weeks later, he earned another impressive honor, being named the Premier League Player of the Month. A few months later, on May 23, Saka signed a contract to remain with Arsenal through 2027.
Saka has continued to make history, becoming the youngest player in club history to score 50 Premier League goals. Recently, on Mar. 3, 2026, Saka made his 300th appearance for Arsenal, scoring the lone goal in a 1-0 win over Brighton & Hove Albion.
Saka debuted for the England national under-16 team on Aug. 24, 2016 in a 3-1 win over Romania in a friendly match. Two days later, he made his first start for the club against Romania once again, where he recorded his first international goal.
Saka was also a part of England’s under-18 team for the 2018 Limoges Tournament in France. Saka scored the winning goal for England in a 2-1 win over France, which would propel England to win the entire tournament. England won all three matches that they played in the tournament, with Saka appearing in all three.
On Oct. 1, 2020, Saka was called up to England’s senior squad for the first time in his career, making his debut as a starter in a 3-0 victory over Wales. On June 2, 2021, Saka scored his first international goal for the senior team, recording the only goal in a 1-0 win over Austria in a friendly match.
Saka went on to start England’s third group stage match for the UEFA Euro 2020, where he would earn man of the match honors. On Sept. 23, 2022, Saka was named England Men’s Player of the Year, a sign of how vital he was to the future of the team.
Saka was named to England’s 26-man squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, scoring twice in the club’s opening group stage match against Iran. Saka also scored once again in England’s round of 16 win over Senegal, before falling to France in the quarter-finals.
On Sept. 5, 2023, Saka was named England Men’s Player of the Year for a second consecutive time. Saka was named to England’s 26-man squad for the UEFA Euro 2024, where he provided an assist to Jude Bellingham to secure a 1-0 win over Serbia in the group stages. In the quarter-finals, Saka scored the equalizing goal, as well as a penalty in the country’s 1-1 shootout victory over Switzerland. England went on to fall to Spain in the final match, but were on the cusp of claiming their first Euro in the country’s history.
Entering the 2026 FIFA World Cup, England is looking to finally overcome their struggles after several close calls in recent tournaments. Saka and England will be heading to MetLife Stadium on June 27 to take on Panama for their final group stage match. England will look to return to the Meadowlands, where the final match of the tournament is being held, to claim their first title in 60 years.
