The 55,000 square foot supermarket located at 625 Paterson Ave. has been part of the omnichannel Dutch supermarket company Ahold Delhaize grocery brands since 2001. Aside from Stop & Shop, Ahold Delhaize owns Food Lion, Giant Food, The GIANT Company, and Hannaford.

Headquartered in Queens, New York, Food Bazaar currently has about 35 locations, including five in New Jersey. The family-owned business operates under the parent company Bogopa — which means “yearning for you” in Korean — and owns Stop & Shop locations in the Flatbush neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York, and in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Food Bazaar is also acquiring the Piscataway Stop & Shop.

The Paterson Avenue Stop & Shop in Carlstadt was a Grand Union warehouse in the 1970s, as well as a Grand Union Supermarket for a hot minute in the 1980s. A few blocks away in Wallington, Inserra ShopRite overhauled a grocery space run by A&P, and then by General Basics.

Food Bazaar employees are represented by the same union locals that represent Stop & Shop workers. Ahold Delhaize is one of the world’s largest food retail groups, employing an estimated 402,000 people.

Stop & Shop launched in 1914 in Somerville, Massachusetts and operates roughly 400 grocery stores with an estimated 60,000 employees.

“After the store closures are complete, Stop & Shop will operate more than 350 stores spanning five states, including 81 stores in Connecticut, 115 in Massachusetts, 47 in New Jersey, 91 in New York and 25 in Rhode Island,” Stop & Shop said in a statement.

  • 625 Paterson Ave., Carlstadt
  • 1083 Inman Ave., Edison
  • 1049 US Highway 1 South, Edison
  • 4861 US Highway 9, Howell
