Happy Pi Day! Pi Day is marked annually on March 14 — or 3.14 — a celebration of the mathematical constant π (3.14). Pi (π) is a special mathematical constant, approximately 3.14159, that represents the ratio of a circle’s circumference (the distance around it) to its diameter (the distance across it).
What that means is if you divide a circle’s circumference by its diameter, you’ll always get a value close to 3.14159. Pi is an irrational number; it cannot be expressed as a simple fraction and its decimal representation goes on forever without repeating.

About Pi Day
Started for fun by physicist Larry Shaw in 1988 for his staff at San Francisco’s Exploratorium science museum, March 14 was officially declared National Pi Day in 2009 by the U.S. Congress. Many restaurants use the occasion to offer discounts on circular foods, such as pizza and pie.
In Princeton, N.J., the community gets together to celebrate PI Day along with Albert Einstein’s birthday, who lived in the town. Many Pi Day events are held at the Princeton Library, which curates educational materials and hosts events like Einstein Story Time.
