Only one team from the Meadowlands took the field last weekend, as the Jets faced the Indianapolis Colts at MetLife Stadium, while the Giants were on their bye week. Having lost their most recent matchup, the Jets were hoping to get back in the win column against a Colts team that has been average all year. The game went back and forth, but ultimately the result was not what many in the Meadowlands had hoped.
Jets Lose 28-27 to Colts, Unable to Pull Off Successful Comeback
Despite their recent struggles, the Jets entered their matchup against the Colts still in a position to fight for a playoff spot, finding themselves only a few games away from contending. With the Colts being one of the teams slightly ahead of them, a win could shift their momentum in the playoff race. However, a win seemed unlikely for the Jets after the first 2 quarters, with the Jets offense struggling mightily and the Colts taking a 13-0 lead. The Jets were finally able to get on the board, however, right before the first half came to a close, thanks to a 29-yard touchdown from Breece Hall.
The Jets seemed to have finally found their rhythm at the start of the second half, forcing and recovering a fumble on just the second play of the third quarter. The offense was able to capitalize on this defensive takeaway, with Breece Hall scoring another touchdown, to make it 14-13. The Colts quickly responded with a field goal to retake the lead, but the Jets were now in a much more favorable position than just a few drives prior.
Near the end of the third quarter, the Jets scored a field goal of their own to make it 17-16 and a touchdown on their next drive to extend their lead by 7 more points. The Colts immediately followed up with a touchdown, but their 2-point conversion attempt to make it a tie game fell short, giving the Jets a 24-22 lead.
The Jets put up another field goal on their next drive to make it 27-22, meaning that the Colts would have to score a touchdown if they wanted a chance at winning the game. Unfortunately for the home crowd at MetLife, that is exactly what they did, making it a 28-27 game with less than a minute left on the clock.
With no timeouts, the Jets looked to push down the field and into field goal range but were unable to get anything going, with sacks derailing their drive. The Jets ultimately ended up running out of time before they could get near field goal range, securing the victory for the Colts.
What to Look Out For This Week
This week will now be the Jets’ turn to have their bye week, getting a good chance to rest and reset after an unfortunate ending to their game against the Colts. The Giants will be taking on the Buccaneers at MetLife Stadium on Sunday at 1 p.m., with a new face leading the team at quarterback. Last year’s viral sensation Tommy DeVito was recently named as the team’s starter following a lackluster performance from Daniel Jones this season. The move now has many wondering if he can replicate his magic from last season.
