Football in the Meadowlands Week 14: Dolphins Defeat Jets in OT, Giants’ Comeback Falls Short Against Saints

The Jets and Giants both took the field this past week, looking to find their way back into the win column, facing two teams that offered them likely odds to make that outcome a reality. The Jets travelled to Miami to face the Dolphins, looking to collect their first win in the city since 2015. The Giants, on the other hand, hosted the Saints at MetLife Stadium as Drew Lock made his second start for the team.

Dolphins Beat Jets 32-26 in Narrow Victory in Overtime

Entering their matchup against the Dolphins, the Jets were slight underdogs following a string of losses over the past few months. The odds were supported when the Dolphins took an early lead, scoring on their first drive. The Jets responded back with a field goal, but the Dolphins also scored one on their next drive, offsetting both of the kicks.

On their first drive of the second quarter, the Jets marched all the way down the field, all the way into Dolphins territory and eventually found the endzone on a 17-yard touchdown from Isaiah Davis to give them a 10-9 lead. For the rest of the first half, the Jets and Dolphins would alternate turns making field goals, eventually leaving the Dolphins with a 15-13 lead at halftime.

For a Jets team that had struggled with scoring points, they were able to put points on the board in each drive of the first half, providing optimism for the future of the game and beyond. With the offense performing well on all fronts, they looked to keep this momentum going heading into the second half.

The Jets were able to do just that, scoring a touchdown on their first drive of the half, thanks to a Davante Adams touchdown. After stopping the Dolphins on defense for the first time in the game, the Jets added another field goal to give them an 8-point lead.

The Dolphins, however, responded with a touchdown to tie the game and with both teams only scoring a field goal in the many drives that followed it, the fourth quarter came to a close and the game would officially be heading to overtime. Having won the coin toss, the Dolphins elected to receive the kick. The Dolphins wasted no time pushing down the field, scoring a touchdown to seal their victory.

Giants Comeback Falls Short Against the Saints in 14-11 Loss at MetLife Stadium

Similarly to the Jets, the Giants entered their game as slight underdogs against the saints, in Drew Lock’s second start with the team so far this season. The Saints were the first team to put points on the board, scoring a touchdown following a string of punts, loss of downs and a missed field goal in the game. The Giants scored a field goal towards the start of the second quarter, but both defenses were performing well during the game, leaving it a 7-3 game entering halftime.

The Giants’ defense continued to play spectacularly, recording an interception towards the start of the second half, however, the offense couldn’t capitalize on the opportunity. On their next drive, the Saints did not turn the ball over again, instead finding the endzone to make it a 14-3 game.

A few drives later, the Giants found the endzone for the first time during the game on a Tyrone Tracy Jr. rushing touchdown and went for a two-point conversion, which was successful to make it a 14-11 game. Now, trailing by just a field goal with just over four minutes remaining, the Giants had a chance to stage an unlikely comeback in East Rutherford.

The Giants forced a punt from the Saints, but an interception for Drew Lock halted their drive and made their path to a win for this game slightly more difficult. However, the Giants defense held up again to give them one last chance to push down the field and either tie or win the game. With time expiring, the Giants got all the way to the Saints 17-yard line to set up a 35-yard field goal, but the kick was blocked, ending their comeback and securing a win for the Saints.

What to Look Out for This Week

This week, the Jets will be taking on the Jaguars in Jacksonville on Sunday at 1 p.m. Facing a Jaguars team that has struggled all season and is without their star quarterback, the Jets will have favorable odds entering the game. The Giants will be staying in East Rutherford, where they will host the Ravens this Sunday at 1 p.m., as Tommy DeVito is set to make his return with the team.
