BCHS Retreat To Victory

Have Dinner With George Washington and Celebrate 1776 Crossing

Spend your weekend with the Bergen County Historical Society (BCHS) as it honors Washington’s 1776 Crossing and commemorates the 1776 British Invasion & Continental Army’s Strategic Retreat to Victory.

The annual “Retreat to Victory” weekend is Nov. 22-23 and starts with a special ticketed fundraiser: Dinner with General Washington at Sanzari’s New Bridge Inn, 6–9 p.m.

Guests will dine with General George Washington, portrayed by historian and author John Koopman, along with two of his Continental Army officers. Each attendee will receive a signed copy of Koopman’s book, “George Washington at War – 1776.”

This immersive evening includes first-person accounts of the American Revolution, live 18th-century music by Ridley and Anne Enslow on violin and hammered dulcimer, and photo opportunities with the General.

Tickets are $125 per person or $175 for reserved seating at General Washington’s table. A plated dinner and cash bar will be provided. All dinner tickets include admission to Sunday’s Re-treat to Victory event.

Sunday’s Line-Up of Fun

Head over to Historic New Bridge Landing on Sunday, Nov. 23, and experience the sights and sounds of the Revolution during a special Retreat to Victory event from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

There will be Fife and Drum performances, troop drills, and fortifications of the Steuben House, as General Washington leads his troops across the New Bridge, echoing Thomas Paine’s stirring account of the 1776 retreat.

All historic buildings will be open for tours, including the Steuben House, Campbell-Christie House, Westervelt-Thomas Barn, Outkitchen, and Demarest House. The day will also feature children’s colonial crafts, opportunities to meet interpreters, historians in period dress, and live cooking demonstrations.

Historic New Bridge Landing is located at 1201 Main Street, River Edge. For tickets and more information, visit www.bergencountyhistory.org

Admission to Sunday’s event is $15 for adults, $10 for BCHS members, and free for students under 18. Proceeds from the weekend support the Bergen County Historical Society’s capital campaign to build a new museum at Historic New Bridge Landing in time for the nation’s 250th anniversary in 2026.
