In honor of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence being signed, NJ Transit will be rolling out the use of custom buses that feature designs celebrating the occasion. The winning designs were recently unveiled by NJ Transit, which included pieces from students at Overbrook High School in Pine Hill and Art Lab Studios in Fort Lee.
The chosen designs not only highlighted America’s historic birthday, but also included the Garden State’s contributions to America’s history. The designs appear on two NJ Transit buses, one in North Jersey and the other in South Jersey.
“New Jersey played a central role in the founding of this nation, and it’s fitting that students from across our state captured that story so powerfully in their designs,” said NJ TRANSIT President & CEO Kris Kolluri. “NJ TRANSIT is honored to carry these works of art on our buses as we celebrate this milestone anniversary.”
The statewide art competition challenged students across the Garden State to put their talents on display and create designs that are both aesthetically pleasing and tell the story of New Jersey’s contributions to the history of the United States. The winning designs demonstrated impactful storytelling and historical relevance.
South Jersey’s winning design comes from Lisaury Adames Valenzuela of Overbrook High School. The design utilizes a blend of bright colors and features monarch butterflies, the blazing star flower, the Cape May lighthouse and the Statue of Liberty.
North Jersey’s winning design was made by Eunice Cho, Sarah Chun, Charles Fong, Yuna Lee, Aryn Ryu, Jenny Xu and Elyn Tao at Art Lab Studio in Fort Lee. The design highlights some of the most iconic moments in American history, including George Washington crossing the Delaware, “Molly Pitcher’s” contributions to the Revolutionary War, Thomas Edison’s invention of the lightbulb and much more.
The chosen designs will be featured on NJ Transit buses throughout the duration of the year, celebrating America’s 250th anniversary and the contributions that New Jersey has made over time.
