Face Coverings Required on Board, Eating and Drinking Not Permitted
Want to go green for St. Patrick’s Day celebrations? Leave the driving to NJ TRANSIT and help the environment! NJ TRANSIT is ready for the season of St. Patrick’s Day celebrations around the region over the coming weeks including the New York City parade and festivities in Belmar and Pearl River.
On St. Patrick’s Day, Thursday, March 17th, full regular weekday service will be operating on all trains, buses and light rail systems to accommodate customers heading to and from the New York City parade and elsewhere around the region.
Important Note: Customers are required to wear masks while inside waiting rooms and on board all public transit vehicles regardless of physical distance through March 18, 2022, per the Transit Security Administration’s (TSA’s) federal directive. Eating and drinking on board is prohibited.
At other major celebrations over the coming weeks including Belmar and Pearl River, NJ TRANSIT will accommodate the anticipated larger volumes of customers attending festivities with some enhanced capacity for select events.
NJ TRANSIT’s Role in Sustainability
Every mile a person travels on mass transportation instead of sitting in traffic plays an important role in a better future for the planet. According to the Federal Transit Administration, the estimated change in an individual’s carbon footprint by shifting from driving to transit would be a 33 percent reduction if shifting to bus, a 62 percent reduction if shifting to light rail, and a 65 percent reduction if shifting to commuter rail. Use of personal transportation for commuting and other travel accounts for almost half of the carbon emissions of a typical American family.

- Check Schedules in Advance: Plan your trip online make your travel seamless.
- Allow Extra Travel Time: Traffic congestion may affect bus travel times to and from New York City, so customers should plan accordingly.
- Ticketing: Purchase round-trip tickets at the start of your trip to speed your return and use the NJ TRANSIT mobile app, which is available for free download on any web-enabled iOS or Android device, to make the purchase even easier. To make a purchase, customers simply install the app and then create an account, which will securely save a customer’s profile information and purchase history for ease of use. Customers can also use ticket vending machines or see a ticket agent, if available, to avoid possible surcharges. Reminder: Bus customers departing Port Authority Bus Terminal must purchase tickets before boarding.
