NJ Transit is adding a new feature to its mobile app to make payments easier for users. NJ Transit is adding a new Cash in App feature to help improve convenience and flexibility for customers who prefer to use cash or do not have credit or debit cards. This new feature will allow customers to pay cash at participating locations and load that cash into a digital balance on their NJ Transit app.
“This Cash in App payment expansion allows for more customers, including those without bank accounts or credit cards, to use the NJ Transit Mobile App and help reduce the handling of cash on board buses and trains,” said New Jersey Department of Transportation Commissioner and NJ Transit Board Chair Diane Gutierrez-Scaccetti. “NJ Transit remains committed to maximizing access to convenient public transportation for all New Jerseyans.”
Over 1,000 retail locations are participating in New Jersey including 7-Eleven, CVS, Family Dollar, Walgreens and more. Customers can now use their digital balances from their cash transactions to now purchase electronic tickets and passes within the NJ Transit app. NJ Transit is even offering a promotion to spread the word about this new feature. The first 2,000 customers who utilize the new feature at one of the partner retailers will receive a $5 credit in their My Transit Wallets to use for future purchases.
“This mobile app upgrade represents a significant leap forward in NJ Transit’s fare modernization program, leveraging technology to add yet another option for customers to purchase tickets and passes,” said NJ Transit President & CEO Kevin S. Corbett. “It also promises to further reduce cash and paper-based tickets and takes advantage of a statewide retail network to expand access to transit, particularly for the unbanked.”
This new feature comes after the large popularity of the app among NJ Transit commuters. The NJ Transit mobile app has been downloaded more than 8.6 million times with 4 million customer accounts and almost 140 million tickets sold on the app since its inception in 2013. The NJ Transit app allows commuters to purchase and store tickets for bus, train or light rail service. Additionally, the app gives users insight into the real-time train and bus departure schedule by station or stop, information on how full a bus or train is, along with real-time notifications about trips. The NJ Transit app is available on the App Store and Google Play.
