Portugal soccer club, FC Porto, will be playing two group stage matches at the Meadowlands this June for the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup. The club’s first match will take place on Jun. 15, as they take on SE Palmeiras. The second match will occur on Jun. 23 against Al Ahly FC. One of the club’s premier talents to keep an eye on as they take the field in the region is forward Samu Aghehowa.
Aghehowa, a forward for FC Porto, is one of the team’s bright spots, helping guide the team to their placement of third in the Portuguese Primeira Liga as the season continues. He has continued to impress, currently sitting at second in the league’s ranking for goals scored this season with 13.
At just 20 years old, Aghehowa is displaying the endless potential that he brings to the club at such a young age. He joined Porto in Aug. 2024 for a transfer fee of €15 million from La Liga club Alavés. He went to Alavés on a loan from Atlético Madrid, who he had signed with previously. In his time with Alavés last season, he was the club’s top goal scorer, recording 9 goals.
Aghehowa has already established an impressive resume for himself outside of his career numbers, having won a gold medal with Spain for the 2024 Summer Olympics. In Nov. 2024, he received the call-up to the Spain men’s football senior team for Nations League fixtures against Denmark and Switzerland. This is an impressive feat in itself, as Spain boasts one of the best national teams in the world. The team won the UEFA European Championship last year, earning the title of the best team in the continent.
As FC Porto heads to MetLife Stadium in just a few months, Samu Aghehowa has the ability to be a key factor for the club as they search for victory in the tournament. His young age and immense talent will be vital for the club as the tournament progresses.
