Double Digit Snow Totals Close School, Govenment Offices, Disrupt Transportation

A winter storm that battered the northeastern U.S. on Sunday, Jan. 25, dumped almost a foot of snow across the Meadowlands, closing most schools and state offices, suspending public and air transportation, and forcing many offices to go remote.

The light rail and access link service statewide was suspended for the full day Sunday, and all train service was cut off at 2 p.m., NJ Transit said.

Newark, Kennedy, and LaGuardia Airports

Air travelers should check with their airlines for updated flight information before leaving for the airport, or consult the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) website for any FAA programs that may affect flight operations at their departure or arrival airport, according to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ).

“Our priority during winter storms is straightforward — keeping passengers safe, informed, and moving while restoring normal operations as quickly as conditions allow,” said Port Authority Executive Director Rick Cotton. “Since 2018, we’ve made significant, sustained improvements in how our airports prepare for and respond to severe weather, working in close coordination with airlines, terminal operators and our regional partners.”

Airlines canceled more than 10,000 flights on Sunday.

“The Port Authority has invested heavily in preparedness, coordination, and accountability across our airport network,” said Port Authority Chairman Kevin O’Toole. “These measures reflect our commitment to learning from past storms and delivering a better experience for travelers even in the most challenging weather conditions.”

TSA Reminders: Airports and Airtrains

  • As a reminder, TSA no longer accepts state-issued identifications that are not REAL ID-compliant at security checkpoints. Acceptable alternative forms of ID are listed on the TSA website for all airline passengers 18 years of age or older who do not have a compliant REAL ID at the time of travel. Passengers who do not yet have their REAL ID or another TSA-acceptable form of ID can expect additional screening. Passports and Global Entry program cards are also accepted. For more information, click here.
  • To manage on-airport parking demand at Newark Liberty International Airport, LaGuardia Airport and John F. Kennedy International Airport, the Port Authority is urgently calling on air travelers to use mass transit and to pre-book parking spaces if they plan to travel to the airport by private car. Travelers who do not pre-book will be charged a peak period drive-up surcharge and may not be able to find a parking spot at the airport. To avoid paying a higher parking rate and guarantee a parking spot, travelers parking for longer than three hours are strongly encouraged to pre-book parking at least 24 hours in advance. For more information on the updated rates and how to guarantee a parking spot, click here.
