On Sunday, Oct. 25, the Bergen County Historical Society (BCHS) will be celebrating its annual Oktoberfest at New Bridge Landing in River Edge, New Jersey. Attendees can enjoy craft beers from local Bergen County breweries such as Hackensack Brewery, Gearblock Brewing and Brix City Brewery. The event is set to last from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
The event is also a birthday celebration for Major General Baron von Steuben, an influential figure in the American Revolutionary War and the development of the U.S. Army. Von Steuben will be portrayed by reenactor Ed Koenig, providing a detailed description of how military life was back then.
Guests can enjoy the lively music of Particle Theory while exploring three 18th century Jersey-Dutch sandstone houses and Westervelt-Thomas Barn. In addition to these locations, the historic 1752 Zabriskie Steuben House will be open for tours throughout the day.
In the Steuben House, guests can find new exhibits featuring Revolutionary War artifacts from the society’s collection. There will also be a collection-based exhibit, specifically focused on George Washington.
The event offers fun for all ages, including pumpkin picking and decorating, corn hole, colonial games, scarecrow making, a taste-testing for a selection of apples and the Treat Trail, which gives out a special treat to visitors of each historical house that wears a costume.
At the tavern, guests can find special fall treats, such as hot cider, fresh donuts and more. The gift shop is another spot for guests to check out as they wrap up a day of fun.
Tickets cost $15 for adults and $10 for BCHS members and students from the ages of 12-20 years old. Children under the age of 12 can attend free of charge but must be accompanied by an adult.
